Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection causes an acute liver disease that resolves with no long-term sequelae in most patients. Some patients will develop acute liver failure requiring transplantation. This Primer discusses the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of HAV infection.
